Anthurium veitchii

Anthurium veitchii, widely known as King Anthurium, is a Colombian epiphytic Anthurium with long, pendant leaves marked by deep, horizontal corrugation. The blades emerge upright and softer, then lengthen and hang as they mature, creating the pleated look that makes this species instantly recognisable.

Growth is centred around a firm crown, with each new leaf adding more length and texture. In a pot, the foliage needs vertical clearance because mature leaves naturally fall below the rim.

Anthurium veitchii leaf character

  • Growth habit: Epiphytic Anthurium with a crown-forming habit and pendant mature foliage.
  • Leaf form: Long, narrow blades that hang downward as they gain size.
  • Surface pattern: Deep transverse corrugation gives the leaves their pleated texture.
  • Colour: Green foliage with a satin to lightly glossy surface, depending on maturity and conditions.
  • Leaf clearance: Raised placement gives mature leaves enough drop space below the pot.

Origin, growth form and container behaviour

Anthurium veitchii is an accepted species in the Araceae family. It is native to Colombia, especially Chocó and Antioquia, and grows in the wet tropical biome as an epiphytic subshrub. Its root system is built for a warm, moist, airy setting, so the substrate should support both hydration and oxygen.

The inflorescence follows the Anthurium spathe-and-spadix form, while the long pleated leaves define the mature plant. As plants mature, the corrugation becomes more pronounced and the blades need more space to hang cleanly.

Care for Anthurium veitchii

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light. Good light produces longer leaves and defined pleating; shield the leaves from direct midday sun.
  • Watering: Water when the top part of the substrate has begun to dry. Keep the root zone lightly moist during active growth, with full drainage after each watering.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, coarse fibre, pumice or perlite. The roots need air pockets throughout the pot.
  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% humidity for smoother leaf expansion. Higher humidity is especially helpful while a new leaf is unfurling.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, around 20–28 °C. Growth slows in cool conditions, particularly when the substrate remains wet for longer.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly through the growing season. Regular low-dose nutrition allows long leaves to develop better than occasional heavy feeding.
  • Placement: Use a stand, shelf edge or raised pot that allows mature leaves to descend naturally.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or the mix has softened. Keep the crown above the substrate surface and avoid compressing the root ball.
  • Leaf handling: Keep expanding leaves away from walls, glass and rough surfaces, as the pleated tissue can mark while still soft.
  • Propagation: Divide mature plants only when separate growth points and strong roots are present.

What to watch on Anthurium veitchii

  • Uneven pleating: Check whether the emerging leaf had enough humidity and space while unfurling.
  • Brown tips: Review watering consistency, humidity and fertiliser strength. Long leaf margins show stress early.
  • Yellow older leaves: Inspect root condition and substrate age. A stale mix can reduce oxygen around the roots.
  • Short, narrow new growth: Increase filtered light gradually and check whether the plant has enough active roots to support larger leaves.
  • Leaf cracking: Give new leaves more clearance and avoid moving the plant while a blade is still expanding.

Anthurium veitchii needs vertical clearance, consistent warmth and an airy root zone. Once mature, the leaves shape the plant’s outline, so placement matters as much as pot size.

Anthurium veitchii safety notes

Anthurium veitchii should be kept away from pets and children that may chew plant material. Like other Anthurium species, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth and throat if chewed or swallowed. Keep it away from pets and small children, and wash hands after handling damaged tissue.

Anthurium veitchii name background

The accepted botanical name is Anthurium veitchii Mast., in the family Araceae. Anthurium comes from Greek words meaning “flower” and “tail”, referring to the spadix. The epithet veitchii honours the Veitch horticultural name, associated with 19th-century plant collecting and nursery introductions.

Anthurium veitchii develops long pendant leaves with deep horizontal pleats, especially when raised so mature blades can lengthen below the pot.

Pretty and functional solar lighted angel statue
Color: White
Pretty solar lighted angel statue that is perfect for garden or cemetery memorial. Charges during the day and turns on automatically at night. It is a good weight that, if set up properly, will not easily tip over. It is also a nice size, not tiny. I am not typically a big fan of this type of thing but this one is very nice.

Detailed small standing angel with light up cross
Color: White
Only a foot tall, so she's a small angel. She would go well on a grave or in a garden. The cross lights up at night. She has an overall nice design, very detailed.

Beautiful angel statue
Size: 7*5*13 in, Size: 7*5*13 in
Got this angel garden statue about three weeks ago to put in our backyard and we really like how it looks. The resin construction is detailed and well-made, depicting an angel with spread wings and three-dimensional flowers adorning the hair, collar, and skirt hem. The craftsmanship is impressive for the price, gives off a soft romantic vibe. The solar panel on the back charges during the day - they claim 8 hours for a full charge which seems about right with good sun exposure. As night falls, the string lights embedded in the flowers turn on automatically which is convenient. However, the lights are not very bright at all. They emit a warm glow but it’s pretty dim, more of a subtle accent rather than actual illumination. You can see the flowers lit up but it’s not going to light up your garden or anything. The soft tranquil glow they advertise is accurate - it’s definitely tranquil because it’s so faint. Despite the dim lighting, we still like the overall appearance and ambiance it creates. The angel design is elegant and the natural elements blend nicely with our garden decor. The statue is weather-resistant and has held up fine through rain and sun exposure so far. The automatic on/off feature works reliably with the solar sensor. The energy efficiency is good since it’s completely solar powered with no wiring needed. Setup was easy, just stake it in the ground where it gets sunlight. The symbolism of angels and flowers is nice for memorial or decorative purposes. The size is decent, not huge but noticeable in the garden. The resin material feels durable. Would make a thoughtful gift for someone who appreciates garden decorations. Price seems reasonable for what you get. Would I recommend it? Yeah if you want a decorative angel statue with subtle accent lighting, just don’t expect bright illumination at night.

Very nice resin sculpture but LED distracting
Size: 7*5*13 in, Size: 7*5*13 in
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this resin Angel statue. It looks better, in person, than shown in pictures. The features of the face, and wings, are very nice. What I found distracting/detracting from my overall favorable opinion is that the LED lights are embedded in the flowers at the waist and base. This is distracting at night as they do not illuminate the face or wings but leaves that in darkness with just bright lights around the waist and base. If the lights were higher up, or more directional, perhaps embedded in the wings to light up the face, torso and wings it would be so much better. To use the solar lights at night, care should be taken to ensure the back is directed toward light and that nothing surrounds the statue to block proper charging, The solar panel in back is very small and will not provide much recharging unless in direct light. If placed on the ground, with plants around it, the panel will be shaded which is not efficient. I am very pleased with the actual sculpture and would rate it higher but, I personally find the addition of the solar lights is superfluous, with no real additional value to an otherwise very nice sculpture. As a result, I intend to turn off the solar light and illuminate this with a garden light/spot.

Great Value, Lasts All Night
Size: 7*5*13 in
Impressed with the quality and performance. The angel is sturdy and weather-resistant. The solar panel charges efficiently even on partly cloudy days, and the LED light stays on from dusk until morning. It provides a lovely, gentle light that’s both decorative and functional. Excellent purchase for the price!
